Band or DJ?

We're not saying don't use a band; just make sure they are good. Don't hire a band you can not see or hear first either at a function. Do not take the word of someone you know, or from a few minutes of a sample video. Remember that a sample video will have the absolute best clips the group has to offer.

A few other things to keep in mind:

  • Bands need to take breaks, so they actually play only a few 15-20 minute sets.
  • Bands have a limited repertoire. Most likely you will be unable to have all of the songs you want played.
  • Requests from guests may not be possible due to the limitation of songs bands have.
  • It is a lot easier to adjust the volume output from a DJ than a live band. For many venues this will not be an issue, but if your event is indoors, this is something to consider.
  • A good band will cost 2 to 5 times more than a DJ. If you are paying less than $1000 for a band, you really need to go watch the group perform and ask for references!
  • Many bands/musicians show up at the last minute for events. Their activity setting up their area and warming up may be distracting to you and your guests.
  • With a DJ, you know the singer of the songs will be great and sing in tune.
  • DJs normally operate alone or as a team of 2 people. If you are really counting pennies, you will save a little on food and drinks by hiring a DJ. Bands usually have a minimum of 5 members.

With a DJ, you do not have to worry
about any of the issues that may occur with bands.

Since you are going to hear top 40 anyway, why not hear the real thing? The DJ is cheaper, and they are there dynamically working the crowd for 4 hours.

In rare cases a band might party hardy and decide they don't want to show up. This probably happens more than a DJ not showing up. They always arrive late at my friend's recording studio. The last thing you want is to have to dig up a romantic music CD, beg the venue manager for a CD player, and use this for your wedding! This does not mean it will happen to you, but it does happen.  Just monitor the alt.wedding newsgroup for 2 weeks and you'll see how often it happens.

Band or DJ? Of course the big debate is DJ or Band. That's always one of the hard decisions a newlywed couple must make. The biggest advantage a wedding DJ has over a band is cost. There are some great bands out there and many lousy...

To Hokey, or Not To Hokey. Of course everyone knows that a great deal of consideration should be given to your song choices. Songs for specific sections of your events as well as general music to be played for your crowd. It is important to know what you do and do not want played prior to your event...
